Unsung team behind long race
The success of the renowned Three Rivers Race depends on an unsung behind-the-scenes team.
As contenders in the 19th race set sail at the weekend, the team – members of Horning Sailing Club who mount a round-the-clock vigil – swung into action.
Guardships were posted at points around the 54-mile course, close at hand in case of emergencies. Constant radio links were maintained between the points at Hickling, Potter Heigham Bridge, Thurne Mouth, Acle Bridge, Six Mile House on the Lower Bure and headquarters at Horning.
The Commodore at Horning Sailing Club, Tony Nash, commented: “It is a tremendous effort on the part of the whole club.”
The man who has led the team of helpers for the past 13 years is Bruce Elias. The race at the weekend was his last as controller.
Overcast
He feels it is time the task “moved on to someone with new ideas.” His place will be taken by Derek Howes.
Mr. Elias has seen the event soar in popularity during his 13 years. In 1966, about 60 boats entered. Now it is commonplace to have well over 100.
Light breeze and overcast skies greeted the 104 starters at the weekend as they set out on the annual trial of skill, endurance and judgment.
John Atkins, in the Broads cruiser Mora, took the race by storm – landing three of the trophies at stake.
Mora finished nearly three hours after the first boat home, but corrected times gave her a convincing overall win.
